How Can I Make Unique and Memorable Family Portraits?

When clients book a family portrait session, one of the most common questions I hear is:
“How can we make our family photos feel unique and memorable?”
After photographing many families—especially those I first met during their newborn sessions—I've learned something important:
The most memorable portraits aren't the most perfectly posed ones. They're the ones that feel real.
Most of my family sessions include young children or babies, which means things rarely go exactly according to plan. And honestly, that's often when the magic happens.
Here are some of the ways I approach family portraits to create images that families will still love years from now.
Follow the Child’s Lead

One of the biggest challenges in family sessions with young children is that… well… kids don't always want to sit still and smile on command.
And that's completely normal.
Every child has a different personality, so my approach always depends on the child I'm photographing.
Sometimes that means:
Playing games
Singing songs or playing music
Being a little silly to get natural smiles
Other times, especially with shy children, it simply means taking a little more time to let them warm up.
Rather than forcing a moment, I prefer to go with the flow and follow the child's lead. When kids feel comfortable, their real personalities come out—and those are the moments parents love most.
The Energy Parents Bring Matters

One thing parents don't always realize is how much their energy affects the session.
If a parent approaches the session feeling stressed or worried that the kids won't cooperate, as children often pick up on that energy immediately.
When everyone relaxes and treats the session as a fun experience instead of a stressful one, kids are much more likely to smile, laugh, and interact naturally. Some of the best moments happen when families simply play together and enjoy being themselves.
Choose Comfortable Outfits

Clothing can make a bigger difference than many people expect.
The best outfits for family photos are ones that children actually like wearing.
If an outfit is:
itchy
too tight
too loose
constantly needing adjustment
it can quickly become a distraction and take away from the experience.
When kids are comfortable, they move more naturally and enjoy the session more—which leads to better photos.
A Real Session Story: Patience Makes the Difference

One memorable session took place in a family's home with a child who was on the spectrum.
She had difficulty following direction and wasn't comfortable looking directly at the camera for very long.
Instead of forcing poses that made her uncomfortable, I adjusted the way I photographed the session.
Often I would:
Pose the rest of the family first
Get everyone ready
Then bring her into the photo at the last moment
This way she didn't have to hold a pose for long or feel pressure to maintain eye contact with the camera longer than necessary. By being patient and working at her pace, we were able to capture beautiful images that truly reflected the family's connection. Sometimes the key to a memorable portrait isn't a fancy setup or complicated pose—it's simply giving children the space to be themselves.
Memorable Portraits Don't Have to Be Perfect

One of my biggest philosophies as a photographer is this:
Memorable family portraits show the best version of everyone—but they don't have to be perfect.
A little posing helps everyone look their best, but overly stiff poses can feel uncomfortable and unnatural.
The photos families treasure most usually include:
genuine smiles
real interaction
laughter between siblings
parents connecting with their kids
Those small, unscripted moments are what make an image feel alive. Because the truth is, families aren't perfect—and that's what makes them beautiful.

The Moments You'll Treasure Years Later
Years from now, the portraits that mean the most won't always be the ones where everyone looked at the camera.
They'll be the ones where:
your child’s personality shines through
you can see the connection between family members
the moment feels authentic
Those are the images that bring you right back to that stage of life. And that’s what truly makes a family portrait unique and memorable. If you're thinking about updating your family photos, you can learn more about booking a family portrait session and what to expect during the experience.
