From a Photographer Who’s Seen It All

Family photo day can bring a mix of emotions: excitement, nerves, and—let’s be honest—a little stress. Between getting everyone dressed, managing moods, and hoping for that perfect shot, it can feel like a lot. But here’s the truth: family photos don’t have to be stressful. In fact, with a little preparation and the right mindset, they can actually be... fun. Yes, really.
As a photographer who’s worked with families of every kind, I’ve seen firsthand what works (and what doesn't). Here are my go-to tips to help make your next family photo session smooth, relaxed, and full of genuine smiles—especially from the little ones.
1. Set Expectations (and Lower the Pressure)
Perfection isn’t the goal—capturing relationships is. So take a deep breath and release the pressure for everything to go just right. When you go into a session focused on having fun as a family, everything just flows so much better
2. Pick the Right Time of Day
Timing is everything, especially when kids are involved. Try to schedule your session at a time when your children are usually in good spirits—after a nap, a snack, or during their “happy hour.” But the best time of day is the one that works with your family’s natural rhythm.
3. Keep the Kids Comfortable
Stiff outfits and overly posed smiles don’t usually go over well with kids. Choose clothes that feel good and allow for movement. Bonus points for outfits that show off your unique personalities. If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or needs a snack mid-session? Bring it! A little comfort goes a long way toward helping them feel relaxed in front of the camera.
4. Make It Playful
The best sessions feel like playtime, not a chore. I often incorporate games, movement, and silly prompts to keep things light and engaging. Think: races, tickle fights, or whispering silly secrets. When kids are genuinely having fun, their expressions are real—and that’s where the magic happens.
5. Embrace the Chaos
Let’s be honest—kids are unpredictable. And that’s okay. A little chaos is not only normal, it’s often what leads to the most memorable moments. If someone’s melting down, we pivot. If a toddler decides to run in circles mid-shoot, we roll with it. As your photographer, I’ve seen it all—and I’m here to make the most of whatever the day brings.
Final Thoughts
Family photos aren’t about achieving perfection. They’re about capturing the little glances, big hugs, silly jokes, and quiet moments that make your family yours. With a bit of planning and a lot of play, photo day can be something your kids actually enjoy—and something you’ll cherish forever. So breathe easy. I’ve got you.
